I remember that same field trip. The buckets of nasty soup we helped cook, lighting a pile of weeds with flint and steel after 15 minutes and Nathan threatening to pull out his lighter to make it burn and all the scary people. The literalness of a field trip was amusing only to the administrators who failed to think up a real idea. The best part was having to see them again in the fall of 5th grade at Missouri Day which replaced the much more exciting Super Sticker Day.

I have my candle still too. I found it when I was moving. Maybe I should use it one day too.

no worries.. I like the way you think. However, I do feel that sometimes, in certain situations or with theories, shades of gray are necessary. It is my opinion (& only my opinion) that your writing reflects a very black and white point of view.
Thank you, though, for taking the time expose your beliefs and allowing them to be subjected to question or influence.

Warm Regards,

Hey Allison,

I actually do plan to come back, pick this up, and integrate it into a much larger argument that, I hope, will answer astute questions like those you asked in your November comment. Thanks for riding my ass--I'll probably do it sooner now.

Best,

Kevin

"That implicit prohibition right there, that injunction to shut up about race, is one tangible effect of our country’s last 40 or so years under the sway of groups organized around common victimhood (a tradition with its clearest origins in second-wave and subsequent feminisms): even implying that the victim has benefited in any way from that which marks him as a victim (his race, his religion, his sexual preference, et al.) is tantamount, in our culture, to discrimination at best and racism at worst. Victimhood in these scenarios becomes synonymous with minorityhood."

Thank you. Thanks.

Thank you for articulating my strong feelings of support for Obama. I have supported him strongly for some time, without being able to clearly state why. Your writing reminded me of my overwhelming wish to cry for joy when Rev. Jesse Jackson was a nominee for the Democratic Presidential candidate so many years ago.

"Hillary I find neither savory nor objectionable; Richardson is teddy bear"

That is the best description of my sentiments to date. Bravo, Kevin.

I definitely see the "teddy bear" as a strong possibility for VP, regardless of who gets elected to the top post.

...i was rather taken by your appropriate regard for the english lexicon, however, i don't particularly feel like there was any conclusion of sorts..

your dialouge ended...it just ended.. no ah ha or inclination to ponder what we should do as voters or activists or whatever we may be.. it was somewhat of a circular story with no ending point.

The only reason i feel compelled to say this was because i would have loved to probe into myself and start asking some questions... the fear part - about the theorist and the politician feeling most at home there - threw me for a loop.

Sure. Dont we all? We just have different ways of re-acting to that fear and our own ways of assuaging it -healthy or not - pro-active or paralyzed.

Please do complete your story.. and if you truly feel you have. Could you possibly elaborate a bit more? "hope for what - for whom"? Perhaps a few lines of hope - for whomever - for all of us.

hope all is well.
